Promotion: Recruit Kyle Parker is promoted to Private, Grenadier Company

Winners of Best Turned Out Fusilier at Boone’s Homestead:

  1. Corporal John Hayes, Ferguson’s Company

  2. Corporal Greg Urwin, Colonel’s Company

Many thanks to Mrs. Nan and Corporal Rob Price for setting up and running our field kitchen at Boone’s Homestead. This was very well done with far fewer people involved than we are used to. So again, many, many thanks Nan and Rob…well done!

SECTION 2: Financial Matters

No changes

SECTION 3: Uniform, Supply and Equipment Matters

Southern Campaign Uniform

The late war, Southern campaign uniform has been decided upon. It is first of all OPTIONAL. Secondly it does not, and will not replace our 1775 Boston Garrison uniform which is, and will remain, the main uniform and which any and all must have. The first time it is expected to be authorized for wear will be in the spring of 2009. The events it will be specified for in 2009 will be Guilford Courthouse (not a regimental event) and Under The Redcoat in Williamsburg.

This uniform may only be worn when specifically ordered by the Regimental Commander! Pardon my using the third person for myself, but the emphasis is important. I will obtain this uniform myself, of course, and one thing we will be very picky about is never mixing our primary and late war uniform. Once we begin to authorize this late war uniform every event will specify which uniform is to be worn. Since this late war uniform will ONLY be authorized for Southern events, such as Guilford, Yorktown, Greenspring, Camden, and such there will never be any doubt about where it MAY be authorized…as in never in the North or Midwest! So, 90% of all events won’t be affected at all.

In order to ensure ‘uniformity’, and control the costs, the materials and patterns, and places to obtain what is necessary will in all cases be provided through our quartermaster. Below is what will be required.

  1. Coveralls made from Russian Drill material. (This replaces the breeches and gaiters.)
  2. A Bicorn Hat with three, feathers. (This replaces the bearskin or light infantry helmet.)

In addition, when in the late war uniform…

  1. The waist carriage will be worn over the right, shoulder.
  2. No hangers will be carried except by musicians.
  3. No match cases will be on the cartridge box belt. (We know that our grenadiers were not in the South, but so that grenadiers can choose to ‘play’ southern campaign this is a simple change to temporarily make.)
  4. Wigs are NOT required, since for the most part in the South hair was cropped.

Because the 23rd was one of very few regiments to get new coats late in the war, we do not have to make any changes to our coats.

SECTION 5: 2008 events

June 21-22, 2008: Monmouth, New Jersey

(OIC: Major Siegel)

THIS MAY BE THE LAST TIME MONMOUTH STATE PARK IS OPEN!

The governor of New Jersey, in an attempt to save money, has placed a number of state parks on a list to be closed as of 1 July this year. Monmouth Battlefield State Park is on the list.

This will be a company type event, not a regimental one. It has been moved up a week due to conflicting events the end of June, like UTR and the French and Indian War big event at Ticonderoga. This is sponsored by the BAR but it is NOT a BAR member only event. This is an event members living in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, or southern New York should consider attending. Although I’ll handle the administrative stuff, I’m playing a mounted, staff officer so another officer will be appointed to command on the field. We will NOT plan on feeding in camp, so be prepared to ‘restaurant’ it. We will wear our regular uniform, though depending on the heat and humidity I may choose to remove neck stocks. Unfortunately, that visit and cross country run by members of the 1st Battalion (Royal Welch Fusiliers) The Royal Welsh will not take place. I have not received any additional information and I have also not received any replies to my queries…too bad really.

July 12-13, 2008: Fort Laurens, Ohio (BAR event)

(OIC Captain Pieper)

July 26-27, 2008: Fort St. Joseph, Niles, Michigan (BAR event)

(OIC Captain Pieper)

August 2-3, 2008: Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts

(OIC: Major Siegel)

This will be a joint event with the 10th Regiment and other, New England based units at the very nice site of Old Sturbridge Village. We will be able to camp in the historic, reproduced village, and fight several times as well. This is an event recommended for members in New England, up state New York, and not too far away New York and New Jersey. This would be a good event in which to do in camp meals and the regiment will support this if there is sufficient interest.

August 16-17: Fort Ligonier, BAR National Encampment, Ligonier, Pennsylvania

(OIC: Captain Pieper)

This year’s BAR national encampment is something our Midwest company and every member of the 23rd who can attend should support. I believe it is important for us to support the BAR this year in as much as those who are BAR members can do so. I am involved in setting up the scenario for this event so I’ll know a lot about the details after my meeting on site there in July. Therefore, details about this event will be published in the August future Fusilier.

August 30-31, 2008: Faire at New Boston, Springfield, Ohio (BAR event)

(OIC Captain Pieper)

September 6-7, 2008: Fort Ticonderoga

(OIC: Captain Gates)

This is a repeat of the always successful and enjoyable event at Fort Ticonderoga. Everyone who goes will ‘play’ light infantry, meaning forage caps for grenadiers and fusiliers, and no hangers or match casers for grenadiers. If you can make this event by all means do so. Meals will be provided and more about that will be forthcoming later this year. I strongly recommend this event to all.

September 20-21, 2008 Army Heritage Fair, Carlisle, Pennsylvania

(OIC Captain Morgan)

October 4, 2008: Chew House, Germantown, Pennsylvania

(OIC Captain Morgan)

October 18-19 2008: Gloucester, Virginia

(OIC: Major Siegel)

The British Brigade and Continental Line, along with the BAR sanctioning the event, are planning a major event right across the river from Yorktown. This will be a regional event for the 23rd. However, the 23rd DID fight in this battle. And furthermore, everyone fielding in a red coat will be playing the part of the 23rd…and further-furthermore I’ve been asked to command all the ‘red coats’ (someone else will have the Loyalists and Germans, and British Brigade commander Mike Grenier will be in over all command of the Crown Forces). Based on information received at the British Brigade meeting this is going to be a fine event and I strongly recommend it to all.

November 1-2, 2008: Hope Lodge, Pennsylvania

(OIC Captain Thomson)

SECTION 6: 2009 and 2010 Events

April 2009: Battle Road

This will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Park Service’s reconstruction of much of Battle Road. There will be considerable fighting throughout Concord and Lexington (off NPS land). This will be worth attending. We will probably hold our Saint David’s Day dinner concurrent with this event!

May 2009: Jerusalem Mills, Maryland

This has been chosen as one of two, major British Brigade events for 2009. It will be our main, regimental event for 2009.

End of June 2009: UTR Williamsburg, Virginia

We will seek to be invited back to Williamsburg in 2009 and I’m sure we will receive an invitation. We should support this event on as large a scale as possible. Williamsburg is indicating that they wish participants to be in the uniform worn in the Southern Campaign. Therefore this event will be a late war uniform event for us.

August 2009: Cooperstown, New York

This will be the second, British Brigade event for 2009, and will be our secondary, regimental event.

Columbus Day Weekend, October 2010: Brandywine State Park, Delaware

This has been chosen as a major, British Brigade event in 2010. It will probably be our main, regimental event for 2010..

SECTION 7: Commander’s Comments

Boone’s Homestead was a fine event, which unfortunately got rained out on Sunday. Breaking down and taking home wet canvas is so much FUN! Thanks to all who attended from California, Ohio and closer. I know everyone enjoyed our several fast, assaults against the rebels which, as usual, totally confused them and threw them back…FUN!

Remember, those coming to Monmouth, we are NOT doing any regimental cooking so you are on your own for meals there.

Since I am supposed to be riding a horse, which animal I will not meet until Saturday morning at Monmouth, wagers may be taken regarding how long I stay on it!

Ich Dien
