Website problems have been corrected!!!
SECTION 1: Personnel Related Matters
Returned to active service: Fusilier Bob Hanley, Colonel’s Company
Transferred to Grenadier Company: Recruit Sean Beaudette
Retired to Pensioner’s Company: Fusilier Jack Claudio, Colonel’s Company
Company Commanders are asked to inform me of any promotions they wish made so that these may be done at Boone’s Homestead, with maximum personnel in attendance.
SECTION 2: Financial Matters
No changes; insurance bill being paid as dues are received from each company. This is the major item we have to pay for each year!
SECTION 3: Uniform, Supply and Equipment Matters
Two, excellent tailoring sources for coats and other uniform items, based upon very successful experiences from members of the Colonel’s company are:
Mr. Neal Redmond of,
Druids Oak
11601 Ziegler Road S.E.
Hancock, Maryland 21750
301-478-3200
Ms. Barbara Shaputis of,
Yesteryear
5000 Spring Road
Shermandale, Pennsylvania 17090
717-582-8147
Two of our own members who do superb work and both of whom have done tailoring work for me are:
Grenadier Mike Grillo
347-804-9763
Fusilier Christopher Cook
413-783-3870
As always, your first source for equipment, including a new musket, should be our own quartermaster. We have some muskets on hand and would very much like to sell them. Contact Captain Thomson for details. His e-mail address is in the Fusilier heading.
SECTION 5: 2008 events
May 17-18, 2008: Boone’s Homestead, Pennsylvania
(OIC: Major Siegel)
This will be our main, regimental event for 2008.
This is a British Brigade, Continental Line event and will be the main event for both organizations in 2008. Many of us have been there several times and the site is great. We will provide meals in camp at this event to include lunch on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. A roast beef main course for supper will be provided to all by The British Brigade. The price for food for the entire weekend will be $8.00. We will field our colors at this event. Fergusson’s Company is asked to make this their eastern event for 2008. Ammunition for Ferguson’s Company has been arranged already. More. We know the site. The Continental Line provides fine opposition. The British Brigade is in command. And we’ll have a great time. Captain Morgan will be the Brigade Major for the Union Brigade at this event. Therefore, any administrative problems will be entirely his fault! The responsibility for the weather rests with Colonel Vivian’s Company, so Captain Morgan has TWO opportunities to impress us all! (Never let it be said that I don’t provide opportunities for our officers to ‘shine’!)
We have had many members, and regimental women volunteer to help with our field, kitchen. The Regimental woman in charge of our kitchen at this event will be Mrs. Nan Price.
We will use this event for some posed photographs of the regiment in ranks and drilling, and also firing and attacking.

June 21-22, 2008: Monmouth, New Jersey
(OIC: Major Siegel)
THIS MAY BE THE LAST TIME MONMOUTH STATE PARK IS OPEN!
The governor of New Jersey, in an attempt to save money, has placed a number of state parks on a list to be closed as of 1 July this year. Monmouth Battlefield State Park is on the list.
This will be a company type event, not a regimental one. It has been moved up a week due to conflicting events the end of June, like UTR and the French and Indian War big event at Ticonderoga. This is sponsored by the BAR but it is NOT a BAR member only event. We are expecting some soldiers from the 1st Battalion (Royal Welch Fusiliers) of The Royal Welsh to be there as part of a long, distance run we will be supporting. More details about this will be provided as soon as I know them. This is an event members living in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, or southern New York should consider attending. Although I’ll handle the administrative stuff, I plan on fielding as a fusilier so another officer will be appointed to command on the field. We will NOT plan on feeding in camp, so be prepared to ‘restaurant’ it. We will wear our regular uniform, though depending on the heat and humidity I may choose the option of having all remove neck stocks.
July 12-13, 2008: Fort Laurens, Ohio (BAR event)
(OIC Captain Pieper)
July 26-27, 2008: Fort St. Joseph, Niles, Michigan (BAR event)
(OIC Captain Pieper)
August 2-3, 2008: Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts
(OIC: Major Siegel)
This will be a joint event with the 10th Regiment and other, New England based units at the very nice site of Old Sturbridge Village. We will be able to camp in the historic, reproduced village, and fight several times as well. This is an event recommended for members in New England, up state New York, and not too far away New York and New Jersey. This would be a good event in which to do in camp meals and the regiment will support this if there is sufficient interest.
August 16-17: Fort Ligonier, BAR National Encampment, Ligonier, Pennsylvania
(OIC: Captain Pieper)
This year’s BAR national encampment is something our Midwest company and every member of the 23rd who can attend should support. I believe it is important for us to support the BAR this year in as much as those who are BAR members can do so. I am involved in setting up the scenario for this event so I’ll know a lot about the details after my meeting on site there in July. Therefore, details about this event will be published in the August future Fusilier.
August 30-31, 2008: Faire at New Boston, Springfield, Ohio (BAR event)
(OIC Captain Pieper)
September 6-7, 2008: Fort Ticonderoga
(OIC: Captain Gates)
This is a repeat of the always successful and enjoyable event at Fort Ticonderoga. Everyone who goes will ‘play’ light infantry, meaning forage caps for grenadiers and fusiliers, and no hangers or match casers for grenadiers. If you can make this event by all means do so. Meals will be provided and more about that will be forthcoming later this year. I strongly recommend this event to all.
September 20-21, 2008 Army Heritage Fair, Carlisle, Pennsylvania
(OIC Captain Morgan)
October 4, 2008: Chew House, Germantown, Pennsylvania
(OIC Captain Morgan)
October 18-19 2008: Gloucester, Virginia
(OIC: Major Siegel)
The British Brigade and Continental Line, along with the BAR sanctioning the event, are planning a major event right across the river from Yorktown. This will be a regional event for the 23rd. However, the 23rd DID fight in this battle. And furthermore, everyone fielding in a red coat will be playing the part of the 23rd…and further-furthermore I’ve been asked to command all the ‘red coats’ (someone else will have the Loyalists and Germans, and British Brigade commander Mike Grenier will be in over all command of the Crown Forces). Based on information received at the British Brigade meeting this is going to be a fine event and I strongly recommend it to all.
November 1-2, 2008: Hope Lodge, Pennsylvania
(OIC Captain Thomson)
SECTION 6: 2009 and 2010 Events
April 2009: Battle Road
This will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Park Service’s reconstruction of much of Battle Road. There will be considerable fighting throughout Concord and Lexington (off NPS land). This will be worth attending. We will probably hold our Saint David’s Day dinner concurrent with this event!
May 2009: Jerusalem Mills, Maryland
This has been chosen as one of two, major British Brigade events for 2009. It will be our main, regimental event for 2009.
End of June 2009: UTR Williamsburg, Virginia
We will seek to be invited back to Williamsburg in 2009 and I’m sure we will receive an invitation. We should support this event on as large a scale as possible.
August 2009: Cooperstown, New York
This will be the second, British Brigade event for 2009, and will be our secondary, regimental event.
Columbus Day Weekend, October 2010: Brandywine State Park, Delaware
This has been chosen as a major, British Brigade event in 2010. It will probably be our main, regimental event for 2010..
SECTION 7: Commander’s Comments
I am looking forward to seeing most of you at Boone’s Homestead. Since this is our number one event for 2008 we obviously hope that everyone who can possibly turnout does so. Of course, we follow the mantra of ‘family first, job second, and everything else third’, but absent the first two conflicts, or something really pressing, we expect all to turn out at Boone’s. I have heard from some members who cannot make this event who have very good reasons, to include active military duty, college graduation, and children’s first communion, etc. Of course such things come first! The company commanders and I sincerely appreciate it, however, when we are informed of such things so that we can better plan for an event based on a realistic expectation regarding field strength. At least one pensioner has asked for, and received permission to turnout at Boone’s. Such permission is an automatic by the way, though it’s nice to be asked. I will have my entire fusilier kit with me at Boone’s. The only thing that is spoken for is my extra musket and bayonet. Everything else is available to help get a recruit on the field. As always, it’s first ask, first get!
Ich Dien,
Ken
